Vietnam Supermarkets hit small shops HA NOI — Modern supermarkets are changing the way Vietnamese people go shopping, and this trend is seeing people make less visits to the traditional street-side markets to get their groceries. According to statistics released by the Ha Noi Supermarkets’ Association, supermarkets are slowly but surely taking customers away from traditional markets. In 2000, the turnover of supermarkets nationwide accounted for only 6 per cent of the total retail turnover. This year, the rate has risen to 16 per cent.             Head of Ha Noi Supermarket Association Vu Vinh Phu said the change in shopping habits was reflected in the expansion of supermarket chains across the country. "There are now more than 200 branches of supermarkets and trade centres across the country, 80 per cent of which are in the major cities of Ha Noi and HCM City," said Phu. "Five years ago, there were only about 50 supermarket branches." Hanoian woman Nguyen Ngoc Lan, 45, said that for her, supermarkets had become synonymous with shopping. "They have several advantages over old markets, such as being more convenient," she said. Another factor luring shoppers to supermarkets is the promise of better food safety and hygiene standards.
